York Street Row House

Jersey City, NJ

Red brick, tall windows, and a simple green cornice give the York Street Row House a modern place among its historic neighbors…

The York Street Row House brings a contemporary interpretation of the brick row house to Jersey City’s historic Van Vorst neighborhood. Surrounded by Italianate and Neo-Grec buildings, the new residence takes its cues from the materials, window proportions, and rooflines that give the street its character.

Red brick matches the adjoining building, and the tall windows echo the proportions of nearby row houses. Bluestone surrounds project slightly from the brick, casting crisp shadows that give the façade depth. A simple green cornice picks up the color and profile of the neighboring building’s more ornate Renaissance Revival cornice.

The building contains two single-floor apartments and a duplex penthouse. In each home, an open kitchen and living area occupies the front of the building, where the tall windows bring daylight into the rooms used most often. The penthouse opens onto a roof deck with unobstructed views of the Jersey City and Manhattan skylines.
